Judith Butler in Lithuanian: Translation Trouble, or Rather Misery

Abstract

The article deals with problems of academic translation in Lithuanian academic community, represented by a particular case: Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble (1990) appeared in Lithuanian a few years ago, in 2017. The translation happens to be extremely bad on many levels, yet nobody has pointed it out publicly. My aim here is to fill this gap by providing extensive close reading of both texts and comparative analysis. In hope to encourage new, more self-reflective practices.
